San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 13, 2025 - Adriana Gutiérrez Colón, representative of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), announced the filing of a resolution to investigate possible illegalities, expired permits, and the environmental impact of the construction of a bicycle path in Rincón.

"No one opposes this project in principle, but communities have denounced the lack of citizen participation, public hearings, expired permits, the excessive felling of trees, and the destruction of wetlands, so there is sufficient cause to investigate the situation. We know that this government's vision is one of 'cement and rebar,' but there are sectors of us who, from our respective positions, will remain vigilant," said Gutiérrez Colón. The PIP alternate spokesperson also stated that the community has reported that the permits held by the Highway and Transportation Authority (ACT) for the aforementioned construction were issued more than 20 years ago and that due to the time elapsed and the effects of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, all permits must be amended in accordance with the new environmental reality of the area.

"The project must be halted immediately and a redesign must be undertaken with the support of the communities, the broadest possible citizen participation, and adapted to the current environmental reality," the lawyer added.

Meanwhile, her counterpart, Nelie Lebrón Robles, questioned the deployment of Puerto Rico Police officers and the arrest of protesters in recent days.

"While the crime wave increases daily in the country, a peaceful protest by citizens concerned about environmental protection is being criminalized. We vehemently condemn the use of institutionalized violence by the Puerto Rico Police to intervene against citizens exercising their constitutional and human right to peaceful protest."

Gutiérrez Colón reported that both Lebrón Robles and Denis Márquez Lebrón are listed as co-authors of Resolution 202.
